Trees - to be discussed at the PC meeting on 21.10.13
Birdham Primary School was given some ‘baby’ trees some 3 years ago to be used in the community. They are now ready to be planted on and the school is keen to be rid of them.
The church has shown an interest and at a recent meeting at the school it was agreed that they could have half for the church field. This leaves the other half (about 18 + some very small saplings, see list below) for the parish council.
It has been considered that the best place to put these is the playing field as nobody else has come up with any other suggestions.
The first question is: where should they be planted on the field?
Obviously they should not be placed where it is difficult for the grass mower to work (he could charge us more!) and I don’t think some people will be happy if they are in the middle of the football pitch!
Bruce, our tree warden, suggested perhaps a copse or a line of trees.
Next question, who is going to help move the trees?
We have had no response to the appeal in the last newsletter, so we need volunteers from the community. Anybody got a spade?
Also, when will this take place?
The school would like it done by the New Year, from the beginning of November onwards. Some work could be done in the school Christmas holiday.
Yet another issue: apart from manual labour, we also need stakes, rabbit guards, compost and ties. Bruce said he could provide compost rabbit guards. But we will need to source the rest. He also said that he is usually busy in term time as he works with schools but he could help us in the holidays.
The trees are:
6 Hornbeam
6 Oak
6 Prunus (Wild Cherry)
plus (v. small saplings):
bunch of 16 hazel
bunch of 6 dogwood
bunch of 9 dogrose
bunch of 6 holly
